マウイトロピカルソープに使っているガーデニアの花についてお話したいと思います。
ハワイではガーデニアの花を園芸用として栽培している所はありません。かつてはひとつ１ドルもする花を花屋さんで買っていましたが、それはとても高価なものでした。
ある日、ハイクにある園芸農園へ行きました。車を走らせていると、そのドライブウェーのわきにある林がガーデニアの林だということに気がついたのです。そして、そこの持ち主にこのガーデニア林をどうするのか聞きました。すると、レストランで、レイやコサージュを売っているフラワーガールたちにその花を売るのだと答えました。そして、彼女は私にも一つ１０セントで売ってもいいと言ってくれました。私は喜んで承諾しました。
そして、数ヵ月後、彼女が電話してきました。その時期、最初のガーデニアの花がついて花摘みが始まるから、来ないかという誘いでした。道は、ガーデニアの花の海で、一面真っ白でした。彼女はガーデニアの下にあるすべての雑草をきれいにして、そこに水をまき、肥料をあげました。どのガーデニアの茂みも１０フィートの高さまで、何百というガーデニアの花で埋め尽くされていました。
私は、何時間も花を摘みました。工房に戻ってから、全ての花を洗い、花びらを取り出して、乾燥機に入れました。ガーデニアの花の香りがあまりにも強く香ったので、そこにいられないくらいでした。
そして、2日後に、もっとたくさん摘みに来ないかとの電話がありました。もちろん、茂みはまたもや、ガーデニアの花で一面真っ白になっていました。彼女は水と肥料をあげ続け、私はガーデニアの花を摘み乾燥する作業を続けました。
この作業は何ヶ月も続きました。どれほどたくさんのガーデニアの花を私が買ったかは、言い尽くせないほどです。私は、最後の花が
なくなるまで、それをやめることができない程だったのですから。ただ、私に言えることは、この石けんはまさにハンドメイドの中のハンドメイドだと言うこと。
南国マウイのガーデニアの甘い香りをそのまま石けんにつめこんで、みなさまにお届けできるのは、私たちの喜びです。私たちのソープを手にした時から、またバスタイムで、その香り、泡立ちを肌で感じていただけることを楽しみにしております。
店長コメント：マウイの日差しと風の中、花園のスタッフの思いを受けて育ったガーデニアの花、そして、その花の色と香りに心惹かれたバーバラの感動がいっぱいつまった手作りソープです。まさに、ハンドメイドの中のハンドメイドソープです。

Let me tell you about the gardenia flowers! There are no commercially
growngardenias in Hawaii. We were buying them from a florist for $1 each,
which is very expensive!! One day I went to a plant sale in Haiku,and
realized as I drove down the driveway that the bushes lining the drive were
huge gardenia bushes. I asked the owner what she did with all the
gardenias, and she said that she was selling them to the flower girls who go
into the restaurants and sell leis, corsages, etc. She said she would sell
them to me for 10 cents each, but I had to buy all she had. I was happy to
agree,and a few months later she called me to come to start picking the
first gardenias. The entire driveway was white with a sea of flowers. She
had cleaned out all the weeds from beneath the plants, and had put water on
them and Miracid fertilizer (which they love). Each bush which was about
10 feet high was covered with a hundred gardenias. I picked flowers for
hours. After I got back to the shop I had to wash them all, pull them apart,
and put them in the dehydrator. The scent was so strong of gardenias drying,
that I had to leave. Just two days later she called me to tell me to come
pick more, and sure enough, the bushes were completely white with flowers
again. She kept watering and fertilizing, and I kept picking and drying
gardenias. This went on for months, and I can't even tell you how many
thousands of ten cent gardenias I bought! I couldn't stop until the very
last plant was spent! Let me simply say that these soaps are very much a
